Berlin public transport tickets will be distributed to participants on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, for use in journeying to site visits on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. Participants are encouraged to go directly to the site visit location on Wednesday morning, planning to arrive by 9:30 a.m. If desired, participants may elect to meet in the lobby of The Westin Grand Berlin at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning to journey with others to their respective site visit location. Specific directions and other logistics will be provided to participants in communications sent immediately prior to the conference; these details will also be conveyed in materials furnished at the conference.
The site visits will take place from 9:30-11:30 a.m., after which participants are free to engage in their own independently-arranged cultural explorations around Berlin. Participants are requested to select one of the following options which best reflects their plans:
Option #1: I will not attend the site visits because I will use the entire day for my own independently-arranged cultural explorations and/or other purposes (e.g., travel).

Option #4: I will attend the site visit at Technische Universität Berlin (TU) (click here for description).

Site Visit Descriptions
Freie Universität Berlin (FU)
The Freie (Free) Universität Berlin was founded in 1948 in the district of Dahlem, which was part of the American sector of West-Berlin at the time. (One of the co-founders of the FU was Herman B. Wells, the long-serving president of Indiana University.) The FU is a public research university with a large variety of undergraduate and graduate programs and about 33,300 students. The group will be welcomed by a representative from the International Office and by Anne Sedlmayer (FU’s head of quality management) and the site visit will include a campus tour.

Technische Universität Berlin (TU)
The Technische (Technical) Universität Berlin is the successor of the Königlich Technische Hochschule (Royal Technical University) which was founded in 1789. The TU was re-established after 1945 and is a public research university with undergraduate and graduate programs that focus on STEM and architecture. Ca. 35,000 students are currently enrolled. The group will be welcomed by Jan an Haak from the International Office and Dr. Patrick Thurian (Head of Quality Management). The tour will include a visit of a new lab/classroom space that is part of the Design and Computation program that the TU runs in cooperation with the Universität der Künste (University of the Arts).

Indiana University Europe Gateway and CIEE Berlin
This site visit combines two institutions (both located in the same building in Kreuzberg): Indiana University’s Europe Gateway and the Berlin campus of CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange.) IU’s Gateway office is one of six Indiana University locations that support IU’s international activities (such as faculty-led study abroad courses). The Gateway partners with CIEE Berlin on some activities and is co-located in a building that houses classrooms and dorm rooms for US students from a variety of universities. CIEE is a nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization that was founded in 1947. The group will be welcomed by Katrin Völkner (Director of the IU Europe Gateway), Andrea Adam Moore (Director of CIEE Berlin) and will have the chance to engage with Cary Nathenson (CIEE’s Vice President for Academic Affairs).
