GenAI in Assessment Community of Practice
The Assessment Institute in Indianapolis, the oldest and largest U.S. event focused on assessing and improving higher education, launched a Community of Practice (CoP) related to Generative AI (GenAI) in Assessment in 2025. We encourage you to also learn about the Generative AI (GenAI) Survey for Higher Education Assessment Professionals.
CoP Purpose: The GenAI CoP provides professional development opportunities for its members, including access to guest speakers and subject-matter-experts involved in the rapidly developing arena of GenAI. CoP members will build networks, pilot projects in their local contexts, and contribute to the development of resources to share with the broader higher education assessment community.
CoP Leaders: The GenAI CoP is led by John Hathcoat from James Madison University, Will Miller from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Ruth Slotnick from Bridgewater State University. These colleagues will be joined by guest speakers and subject-matter-experts throughout the CoP experience.
CoP Involvement: The GenAI CoP offers colleagues the following involvement opportunities: (1) CoP Members were selected in summer 2025 based on their application to join the CoP and membership is closed at this time; (2) Individuals interested in being kept up-to-date on CoP activities, including offering initial feedback on resources emerging from the CoP, may sign up to be a CoP Affiliate. Please email planning@iu.edu with questions.
CoP Schedule: The GenAI CoP meets via Zoom, with additional opportunities for members to network in-person to share resources and disseminate content. Following is a general overview of activities for 2025-2026.
