The Assessment Institute welcomes HIPs in the States!
The HIPs in the States series began in 2018 at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2019 it was held at Western Kentucky University, and in 2020 at Texas A&M University. Beginning with the 2020 Assessment Institute, HIPs in the States will meet as part of this annual event, including having its own dedicated track at the Assessment Institute each year.

About the HIPs in the States Track
Evidence continues to suggest the benefits of high-impact teaching practices (e.g., first year programs, learning communities, service learning courses, internships, undergraduate research, capstone experiences, ePortfolios) to support student learning, engagement, retention, and success. This track explores a range of HIPs with a focus on how evidence is gathered and evaluated to assess program consistency and quality, student learning across various cohorts, as well as faculty and staff involvement in HIPs. Additionally, the track features institutional strategies to ensure fidelity in the creation and implementation of HIPs, to promote equitable access to HIPs experiences, the scaling of HIPs in the curricular and co-curricular space, the use of scaffolded purposeful curricular pathways through HIPs, and the impact of HIPs on student success and learning during the college years. We welcome proposal submissions and track participation from all who are interested in the HIPs field, especially those researchers and practitioners working 2-year and 4-year public postsecondary institutions, where delivery of HIPs can face particular challenges of affordability, access, equity, capacity building, and sustainability.
Please visit the Call for Proposals section of the website to propose a session for the HIPs in the States track.

Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices: Research and Models for Achieving Equity, Fidelity, Impact, and Scale was released in July 2022. The book, co-edited by John Zilvinskis, Jillian Kinzie, Jerry Daday, Ken O'Donnell and Carleen Vande Zande, seeks to elevate examples from around the country of the ways educators are advancing equity, promoting fidelity, achieving scale, and strengthening assessment of their own local high-impact practices. Its chapters bring together the best current scholarship, methodologies, and evidence-based practices within the HIPs field, illustrating new approaches to faculty professional development, culture and coalition building, research and assessment, and continuous improvement that help institutions understand and extend practices with a demonstrated high impact. Several of the chapters are based on presentations given at previous HIPs in the States conferences.
The co-editors also wish to provide two supplementary resources, available for download from this website, that are associated with the book.
- The first resource is a Volume Index, which offers a user‐friendly on‐ramp to the content of the book. The volume index maps the salient HIP topics, including student populations, HIP type, research and assessment method, level of implementation, institution type, and faculty development emphasis, addressed in each chapter. The intent is to help readers quickly find chapters and content that aligns with their HIP interests and to encourage exploration of new topics to advance their HIP practice and research.
- The second resource is a Comprehensive Reference List, reflecting scholarly work cited throughout the book and which informed the co-editors thinking in compiling the book.
